Footnote and Footnotearea Plugins

Introduced in version 3.0

These Wiki Plugins work together to create automatically numbered footnotes. The superscript footnote numbers (like this1) and text are set with the Footnote plugin, and then are displayed using the Footnotearea plugin.

Table of contents

Syntax

First, use Footnote next to the text you want footnoted:
Syntax for FOOTNOTE plugin
text to be footnoted{FOOTNOTE(checkDuplicates=y)}footnote text to be displayed elsewhere{FOOTNOTE}

Syntax for FOOTNOTE plugin
text to be footnoted{FOOTNOTE(sameas=1)}{FOOTNOTE}

Second, use Footnotearea to display the footnotes at the end of the page:
Syntax for FOOTNOTEAREA plugin
{FOOTNOTEAREA() /}

Parameters and Usage

Usage

The parameters are optional for these plugins (nothing required between the parentheses) but here are the steps that need to be followed for them to work:
  1. Place the Footnote plugin just after the text to be footnoted
    • This will create a superscript footnote number next to the text
    • The footnote number is automatically a link to the footnote text (but this link only works if the Footnotearea plugin is also used)
    • The footnote number is automatically numbered based on how many Footnote plugins are used on the wiki page

  2. Enter the text for the footnote between the Footnote plugin tags

  3. Place the Footnote Area plugin at the end of the page so the footnotes will be displayed
    • All footnotes will be displayed in order underneath a horizontal rule
    • The footnote numbers here link back to where the text was originally footnoted
    • Note that the links will not function if there is a page break between the Footnote and Footnotearea plugins. Also, the Footnotearea plugin must be placed at the end of the page because no contents will display after the plugin.

Parameters

The parameters are optional and have to do with duplicate footnote references:
Parameter Accepted values Effect Optional Since
sameas 1, 2... (numeral of existing footnote) links this footnote to an existing footnote optional 3.x ??
checkDuplicate y checks text for previous reference, links this footnote to that reference optional 3.x ??

Example

Typing this into a wiki page:
